No More Food Allergies
It has been so long since I have had time to post an update on little man’s food allergies. I had to have foot surgery (see my post about mommin in a cast ), the holidays were upon us, and to top it off we found out we were being blessed with a sweet new edition to our family. Through all this, a lot has happened on the food allergy front for us. As we are all well aware, I have been treading lightly on adding new foods to the little mans diet. Especially when it comes to adding back dairy and gluten. However, he had other plans!!
The Moment Of Truth
While setting up our Christmas spread, my son grabbed a piece of cheese and immediately took a bite out of it! My first thought of course was to rip it out of his mouth while screaming “NO!” But, the part of my brain that had been lusting over cheese and missing it like crazy thought, “YES! I get to have a piece too!!” Well, that little piece of cheese led us to full on diving into our last two food allergies – dairy and gluten. Christmas Day was filled with love, gifts, happiness, and bites of food I had been missing for what felt like forever!!
The Consequences
After our indulgent day, I was on alert for any signs of continued food allergies. We watched diapers and skin like a hawk. But nothing ever happened… He did not have any reaction at all that we could see. Over the course of the next few weeks my son and I both partook in the joys of eating dairy and gluten. Eventually, we noticed he became a little bit constipated, but this is to be expected when adding dairy and gluten back into a diet. But, overall everything went great!!
I have to admit that since adding dairy and gluten to our diet I have noticed some pretty pesky unwanted effects. The two biggest things to report: decrease in energy and WEIGHT! The weight is seriously no joke!! I almost immediately put on 10lbs adding dairy and gluten back to my diet. And I have missed cheese and bread so much that I have had zero will power to cut them back out of my diet… which I fully intend on doing. Looking back I felt so much better when I wasn’t eating these foods.
In additional to zero will power, the other thing impacting going back to a dairy free and gluten free lifestyle, is our grocery bill. It is a shame that healthy foods and foods made without common allergens are so expensive. Our grocery bill has been cut in half since no longer having to purchase dairy free and gluten free products. I know this opens things up to a whole other conversation. But, something is wrong with the world when processed foods are more readily accessible and affordable… Ok I’ll stop now before I continue on that soap box any more!!!
All Ends Well
I am happy to report that my son is now officially living a life free from food allergies. We could not be happier about his progress. I have hoped and prayed this day would come for so long. It could not have been a better Christmas gift for our family.
